Starting with Elantris is the easiest entry point as it’s not a huge reading commitment unlike the rest of the series. The Stormlight Archive: Words of Radiance (2014). Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell (2013, short story published in Dangerous Women). The Stormlight Archive: The Way of Kings (2010).Elements of the cosmere are slowly being added into the books, behind the scenes, until they come into the forefront with Dragonsteel and the final Mistborn trilogy. Brandon has said that one does not need any cosmere knowledge to understand the books, and that they can be enjoyed separately, but it will be necessary eventually to have a certain understanding of Realmatic Theory. All of the books share a single creation myth (though not all cultures are aware of it), a single cosmology, and are connected by an overarching story. The books take place on different Shardworlds, and each of these worlds is set in the same small galaxy within the cosmere universe. The cosmere is the greater universe in which The Stormlight Archive – and many of Brandon Sanderson‘s other adult fiction books – take place. If Brandon Sanderson’s name sounds familiar it’s because he helped finish Robert Jordan’s epic high fantasy series, The Wheel of Time. Having just took a deep dive into Brandon Sanderson’s cosmere universe I thought I’d put together a handy guide for newbies who want to start reading his work. Brandon Sanderson is one of the most exciting fantasy writers out there right now.
